BMW Motorrad has announced the appointment of Josef Honeder as its new Head of Development, effective June 1, 2026. Honeder takes over the role from Christof Lischka, who, according to BMW, departed at his own request. Lischka had served as the Head of Development since 2019.

Honeder is a mechanical engineering graduate with extensive experience within the BMW Group, spanning over two decades. His experience includes a previous stint with BMW Motorrad from 2011 to 2013. According to a press release from BMW, Honeder's background is primarily in powertrains and fuel supply systems, which could signal a strategic direction for BMW Motorrad's future development efforts.

Markus Flasch, CEO of BMW Motorrad, expressed his enthusiasm for Honeder's appointment, stating, "BMW Motorrad has demonstrated a unique product offensive in recent years. I am very pleased that we have been able to appoint an experienced development expert in Josef Honeder, who will enrich BMW Motorrad with his comprehensive knowledge across the entire field of vehicle development."

During Christof Lischka's tenure, BMW Motorrad introduced several models, including:

  • R 1300 GS Adventure
  • F 900 GS
  • F 900 GS Adventure
  • F 800 GS
  • F 450 GS
  • F 900 GS Rally Prototype

Honeder's responsibilities will encompass the technical concept, engineering, testing, and further development of technologies for all new BMW motorcycle models. According to BMW, his return to BMW Motorrad aligns with his "long-standing and profound passion for two-wheeled vehicles."
